Fareway Stores Inc. has broken ground on a new Fareway Meat & Grocery store in Brandon, South Dakota, a 21,000-square-foot location expected to open in fall 2027 as the grocer’s fifth store in the state.
The Brandon location joins existing South Dakota stores in Harrisburg, Tea and two in Sioux Falls, deepening the Johnston, Iowa-based grocer’s cluster in the fast-growing Sioux Falls metro area. Dean Snyder Construction will serve as general contractor, with site work now underway.
“The Brandon community has experienced tremendous growth, and we are honored to invest in a community that values quality, service and strong local relationships,” said Reynolds W. Cramer, CEO of Fareway Stores. “This new store represents our commitment to providing customers with an outstanding shopping experience while creating jobs and supporting the long-term vitality of the community.”
Adding to Brandon’s growth
The store will bring Fareway’s signature full-service meat department, farm-fresh produce and grocery selections to one of the fastest-growing communities in the state, creating new employment opportunities in the process.
“Our residents have been looking forward to welcoming Fareway to our community, and this groundbreaking represents much more than a new grocery store,” said Brandon Mayor Harry Buck. “It is an investment in Brandon’s future and further evidence of the growth and momentum our city continues to experience.”
Fareway also seeing growth
The groundbreaking continues a steady expansion year for the family-owned grocer, which opened a new Kansas City meat market in August; has stores under construction in Illinois; and broke ground in March on a freezer expansion at its Boone, Iowa, distribution campus to support future growth.
Additional details on construction progress, hiring and grand opening events will be announced as the new South Dakota project advances.
Fareway operates 143 stores in a seven-state region with more than 13,000 employees. The company is known for full-service meat departments, farm-fresh produce and to-your-car customer service, with online shopping available at Shop.Fareway.com.

Store-opening playbook applied: the lede carries location, size, timeline and the fifth-in-state milestone, and the second paragraph names the strategic shape, a Sioux Falls-metro cluster, since Brandon, Harrisburg and Tea are all suburbs ringing the same growth market. The sixth paragraph places the groundbreaking in Fareway’s expansion year from Shelby’s own coverage, the KC meat market, the Illinois construction and the Boone freezer project that’s explicitly building capacity for stores like this one, with August’s KC opening as the Related. Both quotes run, Cramer trimmed of his opening pleasantry and the mayor of his closing praise paragraph, and the release’s “across the region” is recast. The 143-store count runs as the newest figure, up from “more than 140” in the site’s March coverage.
