Johnston, Iowa-based Fareway Stores Inc. has opened a new Fareway Meat Market at 7921 Ward Parkway in Kansas City, Missouri, marking a new chapter in the company’s continued investment in the neighborhood.
The opening follows a ribbon-cutting ceremony Aug. 24, where community leaders, neighborhood representatives, customers and Fareway employees gathered to mark the completion of the new facility.
The store replaces the existing Fareway Meat Market at 79th Street and Ward Parkway. That location has served the Waldo neighborhood since Fareway acquired the historic McGonigle’s Market in 2020.
The 11,660-square-foot store is designed to provide an enhanced shopping experience while maintaining the personalized service customers have come to expect. It offers expanded grocery selections, including additional specialty items, fresh produce, an expanded deli counter, smoked meats and a full-service butcher counter. The store also features a walk-up window offering ready-to-order meals for customers on the go.

The development represents the first phase of a broader redevelopment plan for the property. The next phase will involve removing the old facility, leaving a commercial lot for future retail development. Fareway worked with city officials and neighborhood stakeholders throughout the planning and development process.
The new Fareway Meat Market is open Monday through Saturday from 8 a.m.-8 p.m.
Family-owned Fareway operates almost 140 stores across a seven-state region – Iowa, Illinois, Kansas, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska and South Dakota. The company, founded in Boone, Iowa, in 1938, employs more than 13,000 people and is among the largest employers in Iowa.
