Fareway Stores has broken ground on a 105,000-square-foot freezer building expansion at its Boone, Iowa distribution campus, a project the company says will nearly double pallet capacity and lay the groundwork for future automation investment.
Gleeson Constructors and Engineers is set to complete construction by summer 2027.
The Boone campus has served as the operational backbone of the grocer since Fareway’s founding in 1938.
The expansion will increase pallet facings by 33 percent, improve functionality in dual-temperature environments, add dock space and free up freezer space for conversion to additional dry storage.
CEO Reynolds W. Cramer said the project is a capacity investment and a signal of the company’s long-term commitment to Boone.
“This project reflects our continued commitment to remain the best in meat and grocery, by ensuring we have the infrastructure to support our current locations and future growth,” Cramer said.
“This is also an investment in Boone and in our employees that call the Boone area home. Finally, we want to thank Boone County Supervisors, City of Boone, and other local leaders for their support of this important project.”
The expansion is designed to support Fareway’s ongoing store openings while reinforcing product quality and freshness across its retail footprint.
The company also identified the project as foundational for future technology and automation deployments at the distribution center.
