Bakery Wegmans

Wegmans Food Markets has shared that every product found within its in-store bakeries meets its “Food You Feel Good About” standard, meaning all bakery items are made without artificial colors, dyes, flavors or unnecessary preservatives.

The milestone caps a long effort that began in 2016, when Wegmans first removed trans fats and high fructose corn syrup from its bakery offerings. The grocer launched the “Food You Feel Good About” program in 1991.

“Wegmans is not only an industry leader when it comes to the use of clean ingredients in bakery products, we have been able to maintain the delicious flavors, perfect textures, and vibrant colors that make our bakeries such a happy place,” said Jerritt Branagan, VP of bakery merchandising.

Clean ingredients in practice

The bakery department’s recipes rely on familiar ingredients such as flour, sugar, eggs, butter and real vanilla. Natural colors are derived primarily from fruits and vegetables — turmeric and annatto for yellows and oranges, beets and red cabbage for reds — replacing the artificial dyes previously used.

The announcement comes ahead of graduation season, one of the busiest periods for the grocer’s customizable Celebration Cakes line. Wegmans said the cakes are available in a variety of flavors and designs while meeting the same clean-ingredient standards.
