The National Grocers Association Foundation has established the Catalyst for Independence Award, an annual honor recognizing independent grocery leaders who develop and promote the next generation of industry leadership.
Nominations are open through Aug. 21. The award will be presented during the 2026 NGA Executive Conference, set for Oct. 20-22 in Chicago, with the winner acknowledged at the NGA Foundation Fundraiser held alongside the event.
The award is open to leaders within NGA member companies and ties to the foundation’s strategic plan and its stated commitment to preserving independence across generations.
“An independent grocer’s greatest legacy is the leaders they build,” said Chelsea Matzen, VP of the NGA Foundation. “Our industry’s future depends on experienced leaders who intentionally share their knowledge, provide meaningful opportunities and empower the next generation to take responsibility.”
Four judging pillars
Nominees will be evaluated in four areas:
- proactive mentorship and talent development;
- empowerment through responsibility and accountability;
- excellence in succession and continuity; and
- lasting impact on independence.

The NGA Foundation is the charitable arm of the National Grocers Association. Its programming covers student outreach, leadership development, support for women in the industry, frontline worker training, business innovation assistance and succession planning.
