Building community ties before opening day

The Oct. 14 debut won’t be Ballantyne’s first introduction to Wegmans. For nearly a year, the team has been building connections in Charlotte through donations, partnerships and meetings with local nonprofit leaders, contributing about $30,000 before the first customer walks through the doors.

When JP Prinzivalli, Ballantyne service area manager, moved to the region in January, he began by connecting with nearby schools. The outreach produced donations to Knights View Elementary, a three-year athletic booster sponsorship at Cuthbertson Middle and High School and five $1,000 scholarship grants for seniors at Ballantyne Ridge High School, a nod to Wegmans’ employee scholarship program.

In late August, Prinzivalli and McGuinness hosted a listening session with the local school district, area food banks and pantries, United Way of Greater Charlotte and other nonprofits.

“One of my biggest takeaways from the meeting was gaining a better understanding of the food insecurity many families in the area face,” Prinzivalli said. “It’s not always something you can see, but hearing directly from community partners reinforced the importance of working together to address it.”

Continued community support

Once open, the store will donate perishable food daily to Feeding Charlotte and will run two annual customer scan campaigns: Check Out Hunger each fall beginning in 2027, benefiting Nourish Up, and Fill the Bus ahead of summer breaks. The store also plans a monthly giving circle sending employee teams to volunteer at a different nonprofit, with partners identified through SHARE Charlotte, which supports more than 800 nonprofits in the region.

“We’re thrilled to become part of this vibrant community,” Prinzivalli said. “We look forward to serving our neighbors, supporting local organizations, and being a trusted partner in Ballantyne and the greater Charlotte area for many years to come.”

Rochester, New York-based Wegmans operates 115 stores along the East Coast and has been named to Fortune’s 100 Best Companies to Work For list for 29 consecutive years, ranking fifth in 2026.
