Inserra Supermarkets Inc. opened the ShopRite of Edgewater Commons on Sept. 19, converting a former Acme space at 481 River Road in Edgewater, New Jersey, into its 24th ShopRite and committing to a two-year remodel that will unfold while the 64,000-square-foot store serves customers in the Bergen County riverfront community.
Local officials joined the Inserra family for a 7 a.m. ribbon-cutting Saturday, with family members and the retail team greeting customers, tasting stations and giveaways running through the weekend, and a Singing Mozzarella Chef performing Saturday morning.
“We are proud to open our doors to the Edgewater community while renovations continue, ensuring local shoppers continue to have access to a full-service supermarket,” said Lawrence R. Inserra Jr., chairman and CEO of Inserra Supermarkets. “We know this is just the beginning of an exciting transformation. Over the next two years, we will invest in the store to expand its offerings and create a shopping experience that meets the needs of the Edgewater community.”
The store opens with Inserra signature departments including Patsy’s Butcher Shop, known for high-quality meats and custom cuts, a Fresh Bakery Shop, produce, seafood, a sushi bar, a full-service deli and ShopRite’s Fresh to Table section with grab-and-go, ready-to-cook and ready-to-heat meal solutions.
The planned remodel will add Antoinette’s Kitchen with freshly prepared meals, a hot bar and soup bar, expanded produce, dairy, frozen and kosher departments, and new energy-efficient equipment. The store operates daily from 7 a.m.-11 p.m.

The opening extends a growth year for the Mahwah, New Jersey-based Wakefern member, which brought its Fresh Grocer banner into Brooklyn in February. Established in 1954 by Patsy Inserra, the family-owned company is now operated by third- and fourth-generation family members, running 24 ShopRite stores in New Jersey and New York along with two Price Rite Marketplace and two Fresh Grocer stores.
ShopRite is the registered trademark of Wakefern Food Corp., the largest retailer-owned supermarket cooperative in the U.S., whose Partners In Caring program has donated $65 million to food banks since 1999.
