Safeway plans to mark 100 years in Northern California with a public community celebration on Thursday, Nov. 5, from noon-2 p.m. at its store at 4440 Tassajara Road in Dublin, California.

“This milestone is really a celebration of our customers, our associates and the communities that have been part of Safeway’s story for generations,” said Kelly Mullin, regional president for marketing and merchandising – California Region. “For 100 years, Safeway stores have been places where neighbors connect and families come together around food. We’re incredibly proud of that history, and even more excited about what’s ahead.”

The celebration features food sampling throughout the store, giveaways including a spin-wheel chance at a free bag of groceries, performances by the Amador Valley and Emerald high school cheer squads and band, and photos with Scoot, Safeway Northern California’s new mascot. The afternoon culminates at 1:30 p.m. with the presentation of two 2026 Toyota RAV4s, purchased from Dublin Toyota, to winners randomly selected from more than 55,000 entries by an independent sweepstakes administrator.

Company history

Safeway’s Northern California story dates to 1926, when the merger of Skaggs United and Sam Seelig Stores led Skaggs stores in the region to operate under the Safeway banner. Over the decades, the banner introduced innovations from its Lucerne private label and direct sourcing from local growers to modern check stands, nutrition labeling and home delivery.

To commemorate the centennial, the Safeway Foundation previously contributed $25,000 each to the four oldest hunger-relief organizations in Northern California, and the company will award $5,000 at the event to a Dublin-area nonprofit fighting food insecurity. In 2025, Safeway’s Northern California market donated more than $55 million in food and financial support; the market operates 283 stores with 34,400 associates in Northern California, Hawaii and northern Nevada.

Safeway is part of Albertsons Cos.’ California Region, whose banners include Albertsons, Safeway, Vons, Pavilions, Andronico’s Community Markets and Lucky. Boise, Idaho-based Albertsons operates 2,240 retail stores in 35 states and the District of Columbia.
