Walmart has announced a strategic investment in Base Power, a Texas-based energy company, along with an agreement making Base’s home energy offerings available to Walmart customers and Sam’s Club members.

Beginning in November, customers and members who enroll in an eligible Base home battery offering at participating Walmart and Sam’s Club locations will receive 20 percent off Base Power’s standard upfront battery installation fee. Base installs, owns and maintains its home battery systems, with customers paying an upfront fee the company says is a fraction of the cost of traditional whole-home backup; the batteries are designed to lower energy costs when the grid is on and provide backup power when it’s not. In eligible areas of Texas, Base also offers electricity plans.

“Customers and members count on Walmart and Sam’s Club to help them make the most of their budgets,” said Shayne Wahlmeier, SVP of Walmart Energy. “Base Power gives them a practical way to help lower energy costs, have backup power during outages and support a more reliable grid.”

Keeping the lights on

“We’ve built Base around a simple idea: families deserve electricity that’s affordable when the grid is working and dependable backup power when it isn’t,” said Zach Dell, CEO of Base Power. “Walmart has been helping Americans save money and live better for more than 60 years. Base brings that same commitment to home energy, and we’re excited to do it together.”

The rollout starts in Texas, Base’s largest market, where it serves more than 35,000 members, more than 20,000 of them with a home battery, with expansion to additional markets expected over time. Customers can meet Base representatives at participating locations to learn about services and enroll; availability, savings, installation requirements and pricing vary by location and utility service area.

Founded in 2023 and headquartered in Austin, Texas, Base Power builds distributed home battery networks that support grid reliability. Walmart serves approximately 280 million customers and members weekly, with fiscal 2026 revenue of $713 billion.
