Whole Foods Market will open a new 38,158-square-foot store at 7628 E. Indian School Road in Scottsdale, Arizona, on Nov. 12, replacing a longtime Fry’s Food Stores location, owned by Kroger.

The store, the retailer’s 11th in Arizona, will be led by store team leader Senait Yohannes and will operate 7 a.m.-10 p.m. daily.

The location’s assortment features more than 260 local items from Arizona-based suppliers, sourced with the help of Adam Kaman, forager for local and emerging brands at Whole Foods Market, the Austin, Texas-based retailer noted.

Features of the new store include:

  • Produce: Certified organic, conventional and Sourced for Good offerings, with local items including squash and herbs from Duncan Family Farms, salads from Willo Indoor Farms and citrus from Silver Canyon Citrus.
  • Specialty: A department celebrating cheesemakers and artisan producers, overseen by trained cheesemongers, with local fudge from Black Mesa Ranch.
  • Grocery: Exclusive brand favorites plus local products including Stone Grindz Chocolate, Cartel Roasting Co. cold brew, Kettle Heroes popcorn and Sting ‘N’ Linger Salsa Co.
  • Meat and seafood: A full-service meat counter with animal welfare-certified selections, in-house fresh sausage and butchers cutting to order, and a seafood counter with sustainable wild-caught or Responsibly Farmed offerings.
  • Beverages: Spirits, more than 700 wines and 245 craft beers, including local options from Four Peaks Brewing Company, Huss Brewing Co. and Wren House Brewing.
  • Prepared foods: Hot food and salad bars, fresh pizza, a Market Sandwich venue and sushi rolled daily by Kikka Sushi.
  • Bakery: Bread baked fresh daily, the retailer’s Berry Chantilly Cake and seasonal items, plus local rugelach and hamantaschen from Chewys.
  • Wellness and beauty: Local items including Strawberry Hedgehog soap, Enlighten Candles and Arizona bee pollen from Allen Bee Company.

On opening morning, the store will open at 8 a.m. with samples from Laura’s Gourmet, coffee from Roastery of Cave Creek and national suppliers including Urban Remedy. The first 300 customers in line will receive a limited-edition Scottsdale tote bag and a Secret Saver coupon with savings up to $100.

In celebration of the opening, Whole Foods Market is providing a food donation to Waste Not Arizona, which makes regular surplus food pickups from local Whole Foods stores and previously received a refrigerated van through the retailer’s Nourishing Our Neighborhoods program. The company also will make monetary donations to Waste Not Arizona and PV Community Food Bank.

First announced in spring 2024

The store has been in the works since April 2024, when Phoenix-based retail brokerage Western Retail Advisors announced it had completed the lease, on behalf of landlord Miller Plaza LLC, bringing Whole Foods to the Downtown East Shopping Center at Indian School and Miller roads, minutes from Old Town Scottsdale and Scottsdale Fashion Square. The Fry’s store it replaces had leased 50,000 square feet at the center for 48 years.

“This trade area has experienced a rapid increase in high-end residential density,” Western Retail Advisors founding partner Eric Termansen, who represented Whole Foods in the lease negotiations, said at the time. “As each new luxury vertical residential project comes online, demand rises for top-notch prepared foods, restaurants and specialty retailers. The Whole Foods at Downtown East will serve this growing demographic and give shoppers from Scottsdale, Paradise Valley, Arcadia and other nearby communities a more convenient way to access the Whole Foods brand.”

The lease announcement described the store as the fifth metro Phoenix Whole Foods location, joining stores in Tempe, Chandler, the Camelback Corridor and Paradise Valley, and said the Whole Foods would open space for additional national tenants as part of a broader modernization of the 93,000-square-foot center.

Founded in 1980, Whole Foods Market is part of Amazon’s worldwide grocery stores and serves customers in more than 560 stores in the U.S., Canada and the U.K.
