The Frescal Supermarket on South Boulevard in Charlotte, North Carolina

Compare Foods is changing its name to Frescal Supermarket, CEO Omar Jorge announced in an Oct. 14 video message to customers, with the rebrand of the grocer’s seven North Carolina stores – six in Charlotte and one in Concord – accompanied by investments in store environment, pricing and a new loyalty program.

“The name Frescal comes from two words: fresh and local, because that’s exactly what we are,” Jorge said. “We are the same stores in the same places with the same friendly faces you already know.”

Frescal logo and sloganThe multicultural grocer is investing in “a better environment with a new design, better lighting and new equipment, so we can bring you the freshest products,” Jorge said. Customers also will see “a change in our prices, with a wider selection of products at prices that work better for your budget,” along with a new loyalty program offering better benefits for the chain’s most frequent shoppers.

According to the company’s website, the enterprise began in 1978, when brothers Eligio, Jacinto and Gregorio Peña opened a small bodega in Queens, New York. That single neighborhood store grew into a family of supermarkets built on what the company describes as community values, authentic global flavors and a commitment to service, spanning as many as 24 locations in five states; the Frescal banner covers the operation’s seven Charlotte-area stores. In addition to the store with a Concord address, the Charlotte-area locations are on North Tryon, Sharon Amity Road, Freedom Drive, East Arrowood, South Boulevard and West Arrowood.
