U.S. online grocery sales jumped 20.7 percent in the third quarter versus a year ago and captured a record share of total grocery spending, according to the monthly Brick Meets Click Grocery Shopper Surveys conducted during July, August and September.
Year-over-year growth has exceeded 20 percent for eight consecutive quarters, fueled by steady gains in order frequency and an expanding monthly user base.
“Customers today have a multitude of online grocery options that can satisfy a broad range of need states and/or occasions, from an urgent quick trip to a routine stock up,” said David Bishop, partner at Brick Meets Click. “Many of the newer e-grocery offerings focus on shorter order cycle times, while others strive to provide ways to avoid paying more than necessary.”
Key findings
- E-grocery captured 20.9 percent of total grocery spending in the third quarter – its highest sales share ever – as in-store sales declined year over year.
- All three receiving methods – delivery, pickup and ship-to-home – posted gains. Delivery drove three-quarters of the topline increase, growing more than 30 percent and adding over five percentage points of sales share, largely at the expense of pickup, which grew in the mid-single digits.
- Monthly active users reached a record in September, representing nearly 64 percent of all U.S. households and surpassing the previous peak set in October 2025. For the quarter, the MAU base covered almost 62 percent of households, up 120 basis points from a year ago.
- The share of U.S. households that have ever bought groceries online ended the quarter at 81 percent.
- Order frequency rose nearly 14 percent, corresponding with broader use of multiple fulfillment methods: 17 percent of monthly users used all three methods in the same month, up more than five percentage points year over year.
- Repeat intent keeps climbing: the likelihood of using the same delivery or pickup service again within 30 days grew from 56 percent in 2024 to 61 percent in 2025 and 62 percent this year.
The monthly survey, running since March 2020, is conducted during the final days of each month with adults who participate in their household’s grocery shopping, with results weighted to reflect the national adult population.
