Beach City Coffee bags

Beach City Coffee, a Southern California-born, woman-owned coffee roaster and beverage brand, has earned BPI commercial compostability certification for its full retail coffee bag lineup. The company says the certification makes it the only coffee brand offering certified compostable packaging on mass retail shelves today.

The certification brings third-party verification to every Beach City Coffee retail bag, including Dawn Patrol Espresso Blend, Locals Only, Surfer Girl Blend and House Blend. The BPI seal at the top of the bag alerts shoppers to the coffees’ commercially compostable coffee packaging.

Beach City Coffee is available at Whole Foods Market, Walmart and Kroger-owned banners including Ralphs, Fry’s and King Soopers.

An elusive target

“When I started Beach City Coffee, we used recyclable packaging because I wanted to make a better choice. Then I found out it was not accepted by my own local recycling program. That sent me on a mission for a better option,” said Jillian Salinas, founder and CEO of Beach City Coffee. “Today’s customers care about what their food and coffee come in, and so do we. Now, every retail bag carries BPI certification, giving people the confidence that the packaging is commercially compostable.”

BPI certification provides third-party verification that the bags meet recognized ASTM standards for commercial compostability. As part of the certification, the bags also are assessed against BPI’s requirements for no intentionally added organic fluorinated substances, or PFAS. Because commercial composting access varies by location, the company notes consumers should check with their local composting program before placing the bags in an organics bin.

The brand has used compostable bags in its direct-to-consumer and retail business for years; the BPI certification now gives that commitment independent validation.

Founded by Salinas after more than a decade of roasting coffee, Beach City Coffee grew from a backyard operation in Santa Monica into a grocery brand rooted in Southern California’s coastal culture. The Redondo Beach-based company offers certified Fair Trade Organic whole bean coffee and donates a portion of sales to beach and ocean protection.
