Meijer opened a new 159,000-square-foot supercenter Sept. 30 at 48025 Five Mile Road in Plymouth Township, Michigan, near the intersection of Beck and Five Mile roads. The store is the Grand Rapids-based retailer’s 130th in its home state.

The opening came the same day Meijer debuted a small-format Meijer Grocery store in Fishers, Indiana, its second Grocery location in that state.

The Plymouth Township supercenter features a farm-fresh produce section, deli and meat departments, and specialty, national brand and Meijer-branded grocery items, along with a full-service pharmacy, general merchandise, baby and pet departments, apparel, beauty care, floral and a garden center.

“As a Michigan-based, family company that’s been serving customers for more than 90 years, we are honored to be able to continue bringing value and convenience to Southeast Michigan,” said Hank Meijer, executive chairman. “We understand that value is more important now than ever before, and we will continue working to ensure Meijer customers are getting the best prices on quality items in one easy stop.”

Customers can use the retailer’s mPerks rewards program, redeemable for in-store coupons or fuel savings at Meijer Express stations, along with Home Delivery, Pickup and Shop & Scan services. The store carries Meijer’s exclusive labels, including premium brand Frederik’s by Meijer and True Goodness, which offers products free from more than 100 ingredients.

Store Director Daniel Austad and his team welcomed customers with a ribbon-cutting event when doors opened at 6 a.m.

Community support

Meijer is making $30,000 in donations during opening week, with $10,000 each going to First Step, which provides services for survivors of violence in Wayne County; Miracle League of Plymouth, which provides baseball opportunities for individuals with special needs and their families; and the Plymouth-Canton Educational Foundation, which funds programs in Plymouth-Canton Community Schools.

“Our new store team is grateful for the opportunity to serve Plymouth Township, and they’re already working to become an irreplaceable community partner,” said Rick Keyes, president and CEO. “We look forward to serving our neighbors in Plymouth every day and becoming a valued part of their community.”

The store’s first Simply Give partner is Trinity Church Food Pantry, which will receive donations from the retailer’s holiday campaign running through Dec. 26. The Simply Give program has generated more than $100 million for food pantry partners since 2008.

Accessibility features include larger, height-adjustable changing tables in family restrooms and free access to Aira, an app-based service providing live navigation assistance to blind and low-vision customers.

Meijer operates more than 500 supercenters, grocery stores, neighborhood markets and express locations with about 70,000 team members throughout the Midwest, offering in-store and online shopping. The retailer donates at least 6 percent of its net profit to Midwest communities annually.
