Food Lion will open a new store at 413 N.C. Highway 150 West in Summerfield, North Carolina, on Sept. 23, its fifth new location of 2026 and the first of the six openings the grocer announced last week on its way to 10 new stores this year.
The store is Summerfield’s second Food Lion and brings the Salisbury, North Carolina-based Ahold Delhaize USA banner to 24 stores in Guilford County, deepening its density in the Greensboro market. A ribbon-cutting ceremony begins at 7:45 a.m., with the first 100 customers in line receiving a mystery gift card valued up to $200 and a free reusable shopping bag; the store will operate daily from 6 a.m.-11 p.m.
“I’ve called Food Lion home for the past 40 years and have lived in the Greensboro area for the past three decades,” said Eddie Lambe, Summerfield store manager. “These communities are my neighbors, and I’m excited to welcome them to our new store, provide an outstanding shopping experience and continue Food Lion’s commitment to nourishing the towns and cities we serve.”
Omnichannel emphasis
The location features the banner’s omnichannel template: an easy-to-shop layout with modern decor shaped by customer feedback, pickup and home delivery through the Food Lion To Go website or app, and additional options through Instacart, DoorDash and Uber Eats. Fresh offerings include a walk-in garden cooler, in-store prepared cut fruit, freshly made sushi and a self-service wing and hot favorites bar, alongside ready-to-eat, ready-to-cook and ready-to-heat meal solutions, the Nature’s Promise natural and organic brand and regional items from North Carolina growers and manufacturers through the Local Goodness program. Self-checkout lanes run alongside traditional cashier-assisted checkout.
Ahead of the opening, Food Lion Feeds donated the equivalent of 30,000 meals through $1,000 grants to three Greensboro organizations – We Are One Christian Fellowship, Simple Ways and A Simple Gesture – based on Feeding America’s formula of 10 meals secured per dollar donated. The three organizations also will regularly collect unsaleable, edible food from the store for neighbors experiencing hunger, continuing the food rescue model Food Lion pioneered with Feeding America in 2000.
Food Lion operates more than 1,100 stores in 10 Southeastern and Mid-Atlantic states with more than 82,000 associates, and its Food Lion Feeds platform has donated more than 1.5 billion meals since 2014 toward a goal of 3 billion by 2032.
