The United Family and its vendor partners have raised $500,000 for 24 nonprofit organizations through the grocer’s annual Jacky Pierce Charity Classic golf tournament, held Aug. 30-31 in Lubbock, Texas.
Checks were presented to the 24 groups at a recognition event Sunday evening ahead of Monday’s tournament play. Since its inception in the early 1990s, the tournament has raised more than $7.5 million for nonprofit organizations across Texas and New Mexico.
“Supporting the communities we serve has always been at the heart of our mission, and for 35 years, the Jacky Pierce Charity Classic has been an important part of that commitment,” said Sidney Hopper, president of The United Family. “The nonprofit organizations that benefit from this tournament, including United Way, provide critical services that strengthen our communities. We are proud to support their work and know these funds will make a meaningful difference in the lives of thousands of people.”
Pierce’s legacy continues
Named in honor of the late Jacky Pierce, longtime produce director for United Supermarkets, the tournament drew more than 600 golfers from across the country for five rounds over two days.
“Our vendor partners have played a tremendous role in the success of this tournament over the years,” Hopper said. “Not only does this event help support important community organizations, but it also creates opportunities for companies with shared values to come together and build lasting relationships.”

This year’s beneficiaries include 23 United Way affiliates across Texas and New Mexico — among them Lubbock County United Way, United Way Amarillo & Canyon, United Way Metropolitan Dallas, United Way of Midland, United Way of Odessa and United Way of Eastern New Mexico — along with Thrive of Southern New Mexico.
In its 110th year of operation, Lubbock-based United Supermarkets LLC, doing business as The United Family, operates 101 retail grocery stores in 56 communities across Texas and New Mexico under the United Supermarkets, Market Street, Amigos and Albertsons Market banners, along with 42 convenience stores. The self-distributing company is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Albertsons Companies Inc.
