Tom Lofland

Tom Lofland, president of Jewel-Osco, has retired, capping a career of more than 35 years with the chain’s parent, Albertsons Companies.

Lofland’s departure was announced July 24 on the Chicago-area grocer’s LinkedIn page. It comes less than a year after he stepped into the president role in an August 2025 executive shuffle tied to Albertsons’ merchandising strategy, in which he succeeded Mark Laryea. Laryea moved to the role of president of merchandising for Albertsons Companies.

The retirement follows other leadership and structural changes at Albertsons. On July 23, the company reported a first-quarter identical sales decline, cut its fiscal 2026 outlook, announced a restructuring that consolidates 11 divisions into four regions and disclosed the coming retirement of President and CFO Sharon McCollam.

Lofland began his grocery career with Albertsons in 1990. He held a range of leadership roles across the organization, including VP of center store for the Intermountain West Division, VP of merchandising and marketing for Safeway’s Eastern Division, president of the Eastern Division, SVP of merchandising and marketing and president of the Mid-Atlantic Division before taking the Jewel-Osco post. Earlier in his career he also worked at Supervalu and K-VA-T Food Stores.

“Throughout his career, he led with vision, integrity and an unwavering commitment to people, helping drive growth, innovation and operational excellence across multiple divisions and thousands of associates,” Jewel-Osco said in its announcement. The company also recognized Lofland as an Army veteran and mentor.

The release did not name a successor to Lofland.

Founded in 1899, Jewel-Osco operates 189 stores with more than 32,000 associates in Illinois, Indiana and Iowa.
