A Whole Foods Market produce department

Whole Foods Market is less than a month away from opening its new store in Skillman, New Jersey. The 45,000-square-foot store is located at 40 Nevius Blvd. in the Montgomery Promenade shopping center.

It is the second Whole Foods to open in New Jersey this summer; the Eatontown store is scheduled to open July 29.

The Skillman opens at 8 a.m. on Aug. 21, with regular hours 8 a.m.-9 p.m. daily. Its assortment includes more than 1,000 local items from more than 250 Northeast suppliers, sourced with help of its forager for local and emerging brands, John Lawson.

The décor draws on nearby Princeton University with a collegiate look, pairing distressed white shiplap with rich green, blazer blue and black, the Austin, Texas-based grocer said.

Departments and local sourcing

The produce department carries certified organic, conventional and Sourced for Good items, with all fresh produce and floral meeting the company’s Pollinator Health Policy. Local options include shiitake mushrooms from Mushroom King Farm, tinned vegetables from Row 7 Seed Company and EverCrisp apples from Hudson River Fruit.

The seafood counter offers fishmonger service and ready-to-cook and ready-to-eat items, all sustainable wild-caught or Responsibly Farmed, with local products including seafood cakes and stuffed clams casino from Lagniappe Foods. The full-service meat counter features animal-welfare certified selections, house-made sausage and local items from Wellshire, Bilinski’s, Brooklyn Cured, Bell & Evans and Koch Foods.

Other departments include a specialty cheese counter with trained cheesemongers, prepared foods with hot and salad bars, fresh pizza, a Market Sandwich venue and sushi rolled daily by Genji, plus a bakery and a wellness and beauty department.

Opening day

The first 300 customers in line will receive a limited-edition Montgomery tote bag and a Secret Saver coupon offering savings up to $100. Samples from Palazzone1960 and coffee from Paper Plane Coffee Co. will be available.

Whole Foods will donate a refrigerated van and food to Manna on Main Street through its Nourishing Our Neighborhoods program, which helps food rescue organizations transport surplus food. Grocery pickup will be available shortly after opening.
