D&W Fresh Market took its wellness messaging off the sales floor and into its local neighborhoods, partnering with local fitness studio Spoke Cycle and Strength for a free community event tied to its Spring Refresh marketing campaign.
The Grand Rapids-based grocer and the studio — located just two doors apart in the same plaza — hosted complimentary yoga and cycling group workouts that connected healthy routines with a reason to shop local.

From studio to store
Following the workouts, attendees moved from the studio to a curated Fuel Station featuring fresh functional juices, mimosas, seasonal fruit and swag.
Each guest left with a Spring Refresh bag packed with produce, reusable shopping bags, grocery coupons and an overnight gym duffel. The bag also included an offer for a same-day complimentary spring bouquet, creating an immediate incentive to visit D&W next.

What made the activation stand out wasn’t scale. It was proximity and authenticity.
By partnering with a local business owner — a shopper the D&W team members know by name — and her tight-knit fitness community, D&W showed up within an existing local routine. The grocer invited the public to a neighborhood workout and turned it into store traffic.

The approach helped D&W Fresh Market turn a wellness-driven community event into measurable in-store action, with offers tied to same-day redemption. It also put fresh and private label items into the hands of curated local influencers, invited to amplify the event, alongside health-minded shoppers already aligned with the brand.
The activation demonstrated how grocers can activate outside their stores by investing in nearby partners who already hold trust with shared customers. It reinforced the link between fresh food and everyday routines by showing up where those habits already exist.
