UNFI Sarasota Distribution Center

As part of a strategy to deliver more value for its partners through improved operational effectiveness and efficiency, UNFI has opened the Sarasota North Distribution Center in Florida.

Employees from UNFI’s former Sarasota facility have transitioned to the 1 million-square-foot facility, where they benefit from a more advanced and associate-centered environment.

Sarasota North is UNFI’s first distribution center to use KNAPP’s AI-enabled Pick-it-Easy Robot and the second to feature KNAPP’s Goods-to-Person automation.

The technologies are designed to improve order accuracy, efficiency and inventory management, delivering an increase in quality and service for customers, reducing operating costs and improving the employee experience.

“By aligning KNAPP’s automation expertise with UNFI’s vision for Sarasota North, we’ve created a solution that not only strengthens operational performance but also empowers warehouse teams and makes a real difference for customers,” said Jusuf Buzimkic, chief sales officer, KNAPP.

“This new distribution center was the perfect opportunity to introduce our AI-enabled Pick-it-Easy Robot into UNFI’s network – further enhancing accuracy, efficiency and reliability.”

The facility, which has more than 400 employees, includes a range of features, such as:

  • Streamlined operations – Advanced automated repack systems reduce manual tasks and support greater accuracy and efficiency.
  • Amenities designed for associates – The facility includes a gym, game and recreation spaces, upscale break areas with floor-to-ceiling windows and a driver’s lounge.
  • Career growth opportunities – The DC supports expanded skill development and long-term career advancement.
  • Community impact – UNFI continues its commitment to stronger communities through associate-led volunteerism, charitable giving and partnerships with local organizations like All Faiths Food Bank Pantry and Mothers Helping Mothers.

“Opening Sarasota North is a significant investment as we continue to optimize our distribution network for the future,” said Jeff Sault, president of distribution, UNFI.

“By combining advanced automation with a strong focus on the associate experience, we’re not only improving how we serve customers and suppliers – we’re creating a better place to work and a stronger foundation for long-term growth.”

Sarasota North follows similar investments in other locations, including Carlisle, Pennsylvania; Centralia, Washington; and Manchester, Pennsylvania.
