Wegmans Food Markets said Sept. 17 that it is planning significant investments in its supply chain network designed to improve the work experience for employees, enhance service to stores, increase capacity and support the company’s long-term growth.
Included in the plans is a new refrigerated facility in its hometown of Rochester, New York, as well as the closing of its Winton Road general merchandise facility in favor of a warehouse in Pennsylvania.
Wegmans said the moves will strengthen the supply chain, reduce reliance on third-party providers and provide much-needed capacity for future needs.
“Rochester is our hometown and an important part of who we are as a company,” said Colleen Wegman, president and CEO of Wegmans Food Markets. “By continuing to invest in our stores and facilities here, we’re strengthening our operations, creating long-term opportunities for our people and ensuring Wegmans continues to grow in the community we’re proud to call home.”
Bolstering perishables
A central part of the plan is a new, state-of-the-art refrigerated facility in Rochester that will support perishable operations, including fresh produce, meat and seafood, deli, and restaurant foods.
Wegmans also will move its return center operations from its current Winton Road location to a new modernized building in Rochester. These facilities will offer an improved work environment, add capacity to serve stores and create opportunities for its distribution employees, it said.
Planning is underway; construction and opening timelines have not yet been finalized, according to the grocer.
Network consolidation
As part of its long-term plan, the company will consolidate its Winton Road general merchandise distribution center to its Pottsville, Pennsylvania, facility.
Wegmans said the Winton Road location is the company’s oldest leased distribution facility and does not meet the company’s future service needs.
The consolidation is expected to occur in spring 2027.
No jobs lost
Wegmans said that people remain the company’s first priority and there will be no layoffs related to these changes, adding that it will work closely with affected employees throughout the transition.
“Modernizing our network is essential to continuing to build a safe, more efficient and more resilient supply chain,” said Brian Olney, SVP of supply chain and food safety. “These investments will give our people the tools and facilities they need to better serve our stores today while creating the capacity to support Wegmans’ continued growth for years to come.”
Wegmans Food Markets Inc. operates 114 stores along the East Coast. The family company, recognized as an industry leader and innovator, celebrated its 100th anniversary in 2016. Wegmans has been named one of the ‘100 Best Companies to Work For’ by Fortune for 29 consecutive years, ranking fifth in 2026.
