Stater Bros. Markets has promoted Mike Reed to EVP and CFO, effective Sept. 28, elevating the finance chief who has led the remodeling of a majority of the Southern California grocer’s 165 stores over the past several years.
Reed, who advanced to SVP and CFO in 2023, will continue reporting to CEO and President Greg McNiff. The promotion lands almost exactly a year after McNiff assumed the chief executive role and the San Bernardino, California-based chain elevated a slate of senior leaders, continuing the buildout of his executive team.
“I brought Mike aboard when he joined Stater Bros., and have seen his growth over the years,” said Executive Chairman Pete Van Helden. “He has continued to take on greater responsibility, earned the confidence of those around him and is a great example of what can be accomplished through hard work and strong leadership.”
Real estate beginnings
Reed’s path to the finance chair ran through real estate: he brings more than 26 years of retail real estate development experience and joined Stater Bros. in 2014 as a senior director in the real estate and property management department. He was promoted to SVP of property development and finance in 2021 before adding the CFO title two years later. He most recently has served as interim leader of company’s IT department as his responsibilities have grown.
Reed holds a Master of Science in food industry leadership from the University of Southern California and a bachelor’s degree in finance from Boise State University. He serves as treasurer on the board of the Air Conditioning Contractors Association, is a trustee and former chairman of the Inland Refrigeration and Air Conditioning Trust Fund, and is a member and past state retail chairman of the International Council of Shopping Centers.
The largest privately owned supermarket chain in Southern California, Stater Bros. serves communities at nearly 170 stores with 18,000 employees, marking its 90th year serving the region.
