Walmart is adding Citgo to the Walmart+ Gas Savings benefit, expanding the network from 13,000 to more than 17,000 participating stations nationwide, an approximately 30 percent increase, while holding the membership’s $98 annual price.

The move continues a steady cadence of benefit-stacking that has become Walmart’s competitive playbook for the membership: pile value onto Walmart+ without raising the price, tightening the program’s hold on households that grocers’ own loyalty efforts compete against. The retailer says members who use the gas benefit at least weekly have saved an average of $109 a year, more than covering the membership cost from that single benefit.

“A membership has to earn its place in a household budget. That’s why we’re focused on delivering real value members can use again and again,” said Deepak Maini, SVP and general manager of Walmart+. “Expanding our Gas Savings benefit by adding Citgo stations gives members even more places to save, with convenient locations that fit into their rhythm of daily life.”

Select regions to benefit most

The benefit gives members 10 cents off per gallon and already includes participating Walmart, Exxon, Mobil and Murphy stations, plus member prices on fuel at Sam’s Club. The Bentonville, Arkansas-based retailer said members in parts of the Southeast, Midwest and Northeast will see some of the biggest gains in access, reflecting Citgo’s presence in those regions; the refiner supplies a network of approximately 4,000 locally owned, independently operated branded outlets.

Fuel remains a meaningful share of the household budget, with average annual spending on gasoline and other fuels topping $2,600 in 2024, according to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.

Club Citgo benefits stack on

“At participating Citgo locations, Walmart+ members can redeem their Walmart Gas Savings benefit and stack additional savings when they join the Club Citgo loyalty program,” said Chris Kiesling, assistant VP of light oil operations and marketing for Citgo.

Members activate the benefit by selecting Gas Savings in the Walmart app and linking a Club Citgo account, then entering their associated phone number at the pump, with the discount applied automatically. Participating stations are viewable in the app.

The addition follows last month’s expansion of Walmart+ into Photo Center and Money Center perks, part of a benefits suite that includes free delivery on eligible orders, pharmacy delivery, streaming through Peacock or Paramount+ and early access to deal events.
