Meijer is now accepting Women, Infants and Children benefits for online and app-based grocery purchases in Michigan, making it the first retailer in the state to offer WIC payment for digital orders.
Customers can use WIC benefits on Meijer.com and the Meijer mobile app after adding their WIC card to their mPerks account, which flags eligible items while they shop. Previously, Michigan customers could redeem WIC benefits only in stores.
To support the option, the Grand Rapids-based retailer is offering free home delivery for customers using WIC benefits online. Meijer Pickup is also available and is free on orders of $35 or more.
“As a family-owned company, Meijer understands how important it is to make shopping for healthy, everyday foods easy for all families,” said Don Sanderson, chief merchandising and marketing officer. “We are proud to be the first retailer to offer this in Michigan, building on our legacy of improving accessibility to customers in Michigan.”
Another way to improve access
The move extends a series of benefit-access steps by Meijer, which became the first retailer to accept SNAP benefits through its mobile app and offers discounts on produce and milk for SNAP participants.
“This partnership with Meijer represents an important step forward in modernizing the WIC shopping experience by expanding digital access, reducing barriers, and providing families with greater flexibility to redeem their benefits,” said Christina Herring, director of the Michigan WIC Program.
About 190,000 women, infants and children under age 5 receive WIC benefits in Michigan each year, according to the state.
Meijer is a privately owned, family-operated retailer with more than 500 supercenters, grocery stores, neighborhood markets and express locations across the Midwest.
