Jeff Westrem was store director at the East Grand Forks store for nearly 30 years.

Jeff Westrem has retired as human resources director at Hugo’s Family Marketplace after a 50-year career with the Grand Forks, North Dakota-based grocer.

Hugo’s said Westrem is known for his approachable personality and willingness to help others. He started with Hugo’s in 1976 as a teenager doing grocery carryout. After earning a business administration degree from the University of North Dakota, he was named store director of the East Grand Forks Hugo’s store, where he spent nearly 30 years.

He moved into the human resources director role in 2012, spending the past 14 years on recruiting, mentoring and supporting employees across the company’s locations. He has volunteered with the East Grand Forks Food Shelf, Campbell Library and the chamber of commerce.

“Jeff’s dedication to Hugo’s Family Marketplace over the past five decades has been truly extraordinary,” said Kristi Magnuson Nelson, president and CEO. “His leadership, kindness and unwavering commitment to both our customers and our employees have made an immeasurable difference. Jeff has been a trusted mentor, a respected leader and a wonderful friend. We are incredibly grateful for his years of service and wish him all the best in his well-earned retirement.”

In retirement, Westrem plans to travel, spend time with family, play golf and follow University of North Dakota football and hockey.

Founded in 1939, Hugo’s Family Marketplace is a family-owned grocery retailer with 15 locations in North Dakota and Minnesota.
