Gelson’s Markets has appointed Koichi Toyo as president and CEO, following the departure of Ryan Adams, who had held the role since April 2024.
Toyo brings more than two decades of retail leadership experience to Gelson’s, having been with parent company Pan Pacific International Holdings (PPIH) since 2003.
He also serves as president of Marukai Corporation in California, where he has overseen operations and supported strategic growth initiatives for the past several years.
Background with Marukai, Tokyo Central
Under Toyo’s leadership, Marukai has expanded its Tokyo Central banner, a Japanese specialty grocery and lifestyle retailer, across California.
The company opened its 12th U.S. store in Torrance in December 2024, followed by an Irvine location in 2025 and a Bay Street Emeryville store in early 2026, with plans to explore additional states. Marukai, founded in 1965, was among the first Japan-based international retailers in the U.S.
Adams, who succeeded John Bagan, departs after two-plus years at the helm. According to news sources, Toyo’s appointment marks the first time Gelson’s has drawn its CEO from within the PPIH organization since the Japanese retailer acquired the chain from TPG Capital in 2021.
PPIH, parent of the Don Quijote discount chain in Japan, established its California presence with its acquisition of Marukai in 2013 and also operates the Tokyo Central, Big Save and Times banners in the U.S.
