GrubMarket has acquired Schoenmann Produce, a Houston-based distributor that has served the Gulf Coast region for more than 100 years.
The move integrates one of Texas’s oldest produce houses into GrubMarket’s artificial intelligence-powered supply chain platform.
Schoenmann Produce serves the foodservice, retail, wholesale, healthcare and education sectors in Texas and Louisiana. Under the leadership of owner Cary Hoffman and President Mark Steakley, the company has built a portfolio that includes global imports and a selection of Texas-grown crops.
“Schoenmann Produce has built an impressive business with real staying power in one of the country’s most important regional produce markets,” said Mike Xu, CEO of GrubMarket.
“Their longstanding customer relationships, broad product capabilities, and well-developed infrastructure extending from their Houston headquarters make them a strong strategic fit for GrubMarket, as we continue to strengthen our presence in key U.S. produce markets, including Texas and the Gulf Coast region.”
The acquisition includes Schoenmann’s 90,000-square-foot facility near Houston’s Hobby Airport. The site features 75,000 square feet of cold storage, dedicated ripening rooms for bananas and avocados and a fully refrigerated dock. The facility recently earned a perfect Primus food safety score of 100.
Post-acquisition, Schoenmann Produce will implement GrubMarket’s proprietary software suite, including WholesaleWare and GrubAssist AI. The tools provide digital ERP management, automated order processing and real-time inventory tracking to modernize traditional distribution workflows.
“Joining GrubMarket reflects an important moment in the continued evolution of Schoenmann Produce,” Steakley said. “For more than a century, our company has consistently operated on the principles of quality, service, and integrity.
“With GrubMarket, we can build a future that aligns with these shared core values, while leveraging an innovative-driven approach to long-term growth.”
San Francisco-based GrubMarket continues to expand its footprint as a digital transformer of the American food supply chain. The company operates in all 50 states and has a presence in South America, Europe and Africa.
