Grocery MarketMoves

Food Lion will open a new store Oct. 7 at 5706 Wyalong Drive in Charlotte, North Carolina, bringing the grocer to 154 stores in the Greater Charlotte area, its home market.

The new store in the Mintworth Commons shopping center features an easy-to-shop layout with a wide assortment, including ready-to-eat, ready-to-cook and ready-to-heat meal solutions; fresh produce; quality meats; and a variety of organic, gluten-free and plant-based products. Customers can shop in store or use pickup and home delivery through the Food Lion To Go website and app or partnerships with Instacart, DoorDash and Uber Eats.

Other features include in-store prepared cut fruit, a self-service wing and hot favorites bar, self-checkout lanes alongside traditional checkout, Food Lion’s Nature’s Promise natural and organic brand, and regional items from local growers and manufacturers through the grocer’s Local Goodness program.

“I am looking forward to serving my community of neighbors,” said Merima Cuturic, store manager of the new Charlotte Food Lion. “I feel a sense of pride and excitement to be part of the team at our new store. My career at Food Lion started more than two decades ago, which has always included serving neighbors in the Charlotte area with pride and commitment. Our goal at Food Lion is always to help our customers nourish their families and friends. I am honored to be entrusted with this responsibility and look forward to welcoming people into their new store.”

The community is invited to line up ahead of a ribbon-cutting ceremony at 7:45 a.m. on opening day, when the first 100 customers will receive a mystery gift card valued at up to $200 and a free reusable shopping bag. The store will be open daily from 7 a.m.-10 p.m.

Supporting local hunger relief

In connection with the opening, Food Lion donated the equivalent of 25,000 meals to Lion of Judah in Charlotte through a $2,500 contribution from its Food Lion Feeds hunger relief platform. Lion of Judah also will regularly collect unsaleable, edible food from the store to distribute to neighbors experiencing hunger. In 2000, Food Lion became the first grocery retailer in the country to establish a food rescue program with Feeding America.

With multiple new stores planned between now and December, the Salisbury, North Carolina-based grocer will have opened 10 new locations by the end of 2026. Food Lion operates more than 1,100 stores with 82,000 associates in 10 Southeastern and Mid-Atlantic states and is a company of Ahold Delhaize USA. Through Food Lion Feeds, it has donated more than 1.5 billion meals since 2014, with a goal of 3 billion meals by 2032.
