Each August, the population of Sturgis swells as motorcycle enthusiasts descend on the western South Dakota town for the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally. Founded in 1938, the rally has grown into one of the largest motorcycle events in the world, bringing concerts, vendor booths, entertainment and visitors from across the country. This year’s rally ran Aug. 7-16.
At Lynn’s Dakotamart in Sturgis, preparation for the annual event begins well before the first riders arrive, with support from Associated Food Stores helping the store meet the demands of one of its busiest weeks of the year.
“For someone who has never experienced the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally, it’s hard to grasp the scale until you see it in person,” said Nate Copeland, the AFS district manager overseeing the area. “The entire Main Street is packed with motorcycles, vendor booths, entertainment and thousands of riders from across the country. The atmosphere is incredibly energetic, with the constant rumble of motorcycles, live music and crowds creating a nonstop buzz.”
As visitors poured into town, customer traffic at Lynn’s Dakotamart increased. Store teams worked to ensure shelves remained stocked and customers could find the products they needed, and AFS team members were there to provide support.
“The Sturgis Motorcycle Rally has a tremendous impact on Dakotamart compared to a typical week,” Copeland said. “Sales increase significantly, making it one of the busiest periods of the year.”
To prepare, the store expanded displays of high-demand items, including water and beverages, while refrigerated trailers filled with ice helped support increased inventory needs. Vendor booths and activities in the parking lot created a festival atmosphere that complemented the energy throughout the city.
Copeland said the success of the operation was driven by extensive planning and coordination between Lynn’s Dakotamart and AFS teams.
“What impressed me most was how well both the Lynn’s and AFS teams anticipated the demand and prepared long before the rally began,” he said. “Everyone understood which products would move the fastest and worked together to ensure the stores were stocked and ready.”
Behind the scenes, team members, distribution teams and other AFS support groups focused on ordering, inventory management and logistics to keep pace with customer demand throughout the week.
The scale of the rally became apparent as crowds filled the store from opening until closing.
“A moment that really captured how unique and hectic Sturgis can be was seeing the nonstop flow of customers throughout the entire day,” Copeland said. “The store was busy from the moment the doors opened, with customers stopping in for breakfast, grab-and-go items and supplies in the morning, then returning later in the day for additional food, drinks and essentials. The pace never seemed to slow down.”
Outside the store, the scale of the event was apparent as well. Copeland said walking through downtown Sturgis and seeing “motorcycles stretching for miles … drove home just how massive the rally is and how many visitors come together to celebrate.”
For Copeland, the week demonstrated the strength of the partnership between Lynn’s Dakotamart and Associated Food Stores.
“The Lynn’s and AFS teams went above and beyond, working early mornings, late nights and long hours to ensure the stores had everything they needed to serve customers,” he said. “The willingness of everyone to work together, stay focused and do whatever it took to meet customer demand is what made the rally such a success.”
