Weis Markets’ revenues and comparable store sales were up in the second quarter, but net income was down, with impacts related to Medicare changes that took effect at the beginning of the year.

Total revenue was $1.28 billion for the 13-week second quarter ended June 27, up 4.6 percent from $1.22 billion in the same period last year. Comparable store sales increased 2.3 percent on an individual year-over-year basis and 4.1 percent on a two-year stacked basis.

However, quarterly net income for the Sunbury, Pennsylvania-based retailer was down 9.6 percent, $22.86 million, versus $25.28 million in 2025. Earnings per share were $0.92, compared to $0.96 for the same period last year. The grocer said pharmacy revenue growth was unfavorably impacted by approximately $10.71 million from pricing headwinds related to the Inflation Reduction Act Medicare maximum fair price provisions, which took effect Jan. 1.

The company’s top executive noted that economic forces continue to shape how shoppers are spending their dollars.

“Customers remain focused on affordability and value, which continues to impact how they shop our stores,” said Jonathan H. Weis, chairman, president and CEO. “To support them, we have increased our investment in promotions and targeted loyalty marketing while maintaining strong in-stock conditions and a consistent shopping experience.”

He added, “Customers continue to respond to these offerings, as reflected in sales growth at our newer stores. We are grateful to our associates for their continued commitment to serving our customers and supporting our business.”

Year-to-date results

Total revenue for the 26-week year-to-date period was $2.53 billion, compared to $2.42 billion for the same period in 2025, a 4.6 percent increase. Year-to-date comparable store sales increased 2.2 percent on an individual year-over-year basis and 3.6 percent on a two-year stacked basis. The company noted pharmacy revenue growth for the period was unfavorably impacted by approximately $18.19 million from the Medicare pricing provisions.

Year-to-date net income totaled $50.71 million, up 13.1 percent from $44.83 million in 2025. Earnings per share totaled $2.05, compared to $1.69 for the same period last year.
