The board of directors of the Tennessee Grocers & Convenience Store Association has recognized Joe Greene as its 2026 Retailer of the Year. Greene, VP of produce and floral operations for K-VA-T Food Stores Inc. — operating as Food City — will be recognized at the association’s annual Convention & Expo June 2-4 in Chattanooga, Tennessee.
The Retailer of the Year designation represents the highest honor bestowed by the organization’s member leadership. It traditionally goes to individuals who have demonstrated outstanding professional achievement and meaningful industry and community involvement.
With more than 45 years of experience in the grocery industry, Greene’s career reflects a steady progression of leadership across store operations, human resources and executive management.
In his current role, he oversees produce and floral operations for Food City’s 140-store chain spanning five states. He is known for elevating fresh merchandising standards and strengthening operational performance across the company.
Greene began his career in 1979 as a courtesy clerk with Giant Food Markets and advanced through a wide range of leadership roles following the company’s acquisition by Food Lion. His experience includes serving as store manager, district manager across multiple regions and regional HR manager with oversight across Tennessee, Kentucky, North Carolina and Virginia.
Since joining Food City in 2004, Greene has continued to expand his impact, serving in key leadership roles before being named vice president of produce and floral operations in 2023.
Industry and community involvement
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Greene has demonstrated a strong commitment to the grocery industry and his community.
He has served as chairman and treasurer of the Tennessee Grocers Education Foundation Board of Trustees and as past chairman of TGCSA’s East Tennessee Golf Committee. He has also been involved with organizations including the American Cancer Society and Breakthrough T1D.
In recognition of his contributions to the industry, Greene was inducted into the Tennessee Grocers Hall of Eagles in 2018.
Rob Ikard, TGCSA president and CEO, said Greene’s career embodies the qualities the award is meant to honor.
“Joe’s career reflects the very best of our industry through his leadership, his commitment to people, and his dedication to excellence,” Ikard said. “He has built a career that spans every level of our business, and his impact continues to be felt across Food City and the communities it serves. We are proud to recognize him as this year’s Retailer of the Year.”
