Kroger has completed a $1.7 million remodel of its Southern Plaza store at 4202 S. East St. on the south side of Indianapolis, marking the project’s conclusion with a ribbon-cutting July 31.

The investment brought new decor, new equipment and a new lineup of hot foods, along with a new counseling room at the pharmacy and redesigned aisles to create more space for shoppers. The store, which employs 90 associates, opened in 1990.

“The remodeling here helps us accomplish two essential goals: to provide the quality you trust and the value you love,” said Mike Goodwin, president of Kroger’s Central Division. “We added features and upgrades that make the store more convenient and comfortable, and which showcase the new everyday low prices available across the store.”

Goodwin said the updates modernize the store while preserving its neighborhood ties. “We opened this building in 1990, so the updates help us meet the expectations of today’s customers,” he said. “Still, we preserved the deep connections provided by our decades of service to the neighborhood around us.”

The company recognized produce department leader Penny McReynolds, its longest-tenured associate at the store with more than 31 years at Kroger, who helped cut the ribbon.

Donation to Second Helpings

As part of its Zero Hunger | Zero Waste plan, Kroger presented $60,000 to Second Helpings, an Indianapolis hunger relief agency, along with a pallet of pasta. Goodwin was joined by store leader Hannah Greider and district manager Mike Vickery for the presentation.

“Support like this is what turns rescued food into meals for our neighbors, and we’re grateful to celebrate this store refresh alongside a partner who so clearly shares our belief that no one in our community should go hungry,” said Bob Koch, interim CEO at Second Helpings.

The remodel is part of a year in which Kroger Central Division’s construction and remodeling projects exceed $200 million. The division operates food stores, pharmacies and fuel centers in Illinois, Indiana, Missouri and Ohio.
