The inaugural Nourish the American Dream campaign, a nationwide effort by Albertsons Companies Inc. and the Albertsons Companies Foundation to help end childhood hunger in the U.S., generated more than $12.2 million for childhood hunger relief. The campaign surpassed its original $5 million fundraising goal and brought together more than 300 nonprofit partners, customers and communities.
The total includes $2.5 million matched by the Albertsons Companies Foundation. Campaign contributions supported 49 million meals, with more than 17,000 donors contributing to participating nonprofit organizations.
“Every child deserves the opportunity to grow, learn and pursue their dreams, and reliable access to nourishing food is foundational to that opportunity,” said Christy Duncan Anderson, president and executive director of the Albertsons Companies Foundation. “The success of Nourish the American Dream reflects the deep commitment of Albertsons Companies, our foundation and our partners to creating meaningful change for children and families facing hunger. Surpassing our goal is an important milestone, but our work does not stop here. We are committed to building on this momentum through continued collaboration and our year-round Nourishing Neighbors initiative to help ensure children have the nourishment they need to thrive.”
Nonprofit partners pointed to the campaign’s local impact.
“By bringing together hundreds of organizations nationwide, we’ve built a movement focused on nourishing every child’s potential,” said Rebecca Snyder, director of corporate partnerships at Feeding Westchester. “Here in Westchester County, where 41 percent of households are at risk of hunger, that kind of nationwide momentum translates directly into meals on tables for kids who need them most.”
“We noticed that 30 percent of the donors that contributed to this campaign were new donors,” said Duncan Lawson, executive director at The Food Bank of Lower Fairfield County. “These new partnerships don’t just help us meet the immediate demand today; they strengthen our foundation so we can continue fighting food insecurity in the months and years to come.”
Nourish the American Dream will continue as an initiative of the Albertsons Companies Foundation, complementing the foundation’s year-round Nourishing Neighbors program.
