Albertsons Cos., along with its foundation, is celebrating a decade of fighting hunger through its Nourishing Neighbors program. The program has raised $297 million over the past 10 years to support food insecure communities.
As part of the anniversary celebration, Albertsons’ private label brand, O Organics, is donating $7 million, and the equivalent of 28 million meals, for the second year in a row to the program.
The funds specifically target summer and after-school hunger, times when children face higher food insecurity rates. School breakfasts, weekend food packs and backpack programs are just some of the initiatives that will benefit from the donation.
“In the last 10 years, Nourishing Neighbors has played a pivotal role in tackling the challenge of food insecurity, a complex issue affecting more than 13.5 million American households,” said Jennifer Saenz, EVP of pharmacy and e-commerce for Albertsons Cos. and board chair for Albertsons Cos. Foundation.
“Our commitment as a company has never wavered, and thanks to the incredible generosity of our customers, we’ve donated over one billion meals and partnered with 1,400 nonprofits to end hunger in our local communities. I look forward to the impact we will have over the next 10 years.”
Social media spotlight for nonprofits
To further amplify the impact, Nourishing Neighbors is hosting a social media contest throughout June. Nonprofits receiving grants are encouraged to share their stories using #NourishingNeighbors and tagging @OOrganics. The most compelling stories will win additional grants, with $1,000 awarded daily throughout the month.
Customer donations make a difference
Albertsons Cos. Foundation also recognized the crucial role customer donations have played in the program’s success. More than $5 million was raised in May alone through in-store donations at Albertsons Cos. stores. These contributions have supported innovative programs and raised awareness about hunger issues in America.
The Nourishing Neighbors program, with its focus on children, families and seniors, aims to ensure access to nutritious meals for those in need. Albertsons Cos.’ commitment to fighting hunger extends beyond this milestone, with a continued focus on supporting communities through Nourishing Neighbors.
