United Supermarkets has donated $30,000 to Food2Kids, a Lubbock, Texas, nonprofit that helps children facing food insecurity in the community.
The funds will support the organization’s Weekend Snack Bag Program, designed to bridge the gap between the free lunch students receive on Friday and the free breakfast available Monday morning. During the last school year, Food2Kids served more than 2,200 children from 37 area schools.
“We’re honored to support this organization and, in particular, the Weekend Snack Bag Program,” said Tony Crumpton, market VP of merchandising and marketing for The United Family, parent company of United Supermarkets. “Food insecurity remains a significant challenge in many of our communities, and Food2Kids is making a meaningful difference by helping bridge that gap. We’re proud to stand behind their mission and the impact they make for local children and families.”
Expansion hopes
Each snack bag costs an average of $4 to fill, or approximately $80 per child each semester and $160 per child annually. Students in the Lubbock, Frenship, New Home and New Deal independent school districts currently receive services from Food2Kids, which hopes to eventually expand the program to serve children year-round.
“We are incredibly grateful for The United Family and its commitment to investing in the children of our community,” said Jerry Ramirez, executive director of Food2Kids. “Over this last school year, Food2Kids packed tens of thousands of snack bags at a cost exceeding $220,000. We sincerely thank The United Family for helping offset this expense. Their support is making a tremendous difference.”
In its 110th year of operation, The United Family is a Texas-based grocery chain with stores in 56 communities across Texas and New Mexico. The self-distributing company, headquartered in Lubbock, operates 101 retail grocery stores under the United Supermarkets, Market Street, Amigos and Albertsons Market banners, along with 42 convenience stores. The United Family is a wholly owned subsidiary of Albertsons Companies Inc.
