In early May, members of the 2026 New Jersey Food Council (NJFC) Leadership Development Class traveled to Washington, D.C., for a two-day experience focused on federal advocacy and leadership in the food industry. The trip included an introduction to NJFC’s federal partners at the National Grocers Association (NGA) and a tour of Capitol Hill.
“In today’s environment, national trade associations working on the ground in Washington, D.C., are more essential than ever, providing critical support that helps the food industry foster innovation, ensure food safety and drive economic growth — not only in New Jersey, but across the country,” said NJFC President and CEO Linda Doherty.

“As we approach the nation’s 250th anniversary, this trip served as a reminder to our future leaders that the food industry has long been, and will continue to be, a vital part of our nation and its vision.”
Meeting with NGA leadership
During the trip, class members met with NGA President and CEO Greg Ferrara, who shared the story of his leadership journey through the food industry and discussed the role national trade associations play in advancing and protecting the industry’s interests. Ferrara also provided insight into how strategic communication from food industry leaders can help shape policy discussions and influence decision-making in Washington.
Capitol tour and additional programming
The event included a tour of the U.S. Capitol, which provided information on the history of the Congressional Branch, as well as an evening tour to explore iconic monuments and memorials at the National Mall.
Recently, the group also participated in an NJFC Board of Directors meeting and met with NJFC Chairman Jason Read, director of store operations of Wawa, to discuss leadership roles and advocacy engagement. In March, the group traveled to Trenton, New Jersey, for a similar crash course in state government and the political process.
