Giant Food celebrated a milestone day on May 8, with back-to-back grand reopening ceremonies at its remodeled stores in Vienna, Virginia, and Germantown, Maryland.
The events mark not only a significant investment in the company’s physical footprint but also the grocer’s 90th anniversary, reflecting a legacy that began with the region’s first self-service supermarket.
“This is an exciting time for both the Vienna community and Giant Food, because we are celebrating both the grand reopening and our 90th anniversary,” said Diane Hicks, Giant Food SVP of operations, speaking at the Vienna ceremony. “Since opening our first store as the region’s very first self-service supermarket, we recognize that we are a part of the everyday lives of the people we serve.”
Hicks echoed that sentiment in Germantown, adding, “This grand opening reflects our commitment to providing the best shopping experience for our neighbors.”
Both stores, located at 359 Maple Ave. East in Vienna and 20944 Frederick Road in Germantown, have undergone fresh renovations featuring modernized amenities designed to enhance the customer experience. Upgrades include expanded seafood departments, gourmet cheese selections, a Ledo pizza program, full-service sushi bars with in-store chefs and expansive prepared food offerings.
“Our Vienna store is a special place to work and shop at, and that is all thanks to our associates,” said Trevor Lamb, manager of the Vienna store (No. 763). “We have tenured members who have been with the Giant Food team for about 30 years. We also have associates like Adam Wald, who became a staple in our Vienna community from his viral cupcakes to his interactions with customers.”
In Germantown (No. 362), Store Manager Angelos Ferentinos highlighted the team’s role in creating a welcoming atmosphere. “Our associates are what makes the Germantown store truly special,” Ferentinos said. “They create meaningful connections with our customers and a welcoming environment where everyone feels like family.”
Both locations are among the many grand reopenings Giant Food has planned this year to better meet the needs of its customers.
In addition to the physical upgrades, Giant Food kicked off a system-wide round-up campaign running from May 8-July 4 to support the United Service Organization (USO). Customers at all stores can choose to round up their total at checkout or donate $5 to earn 500 Flexible Points, directly supporting military members and their families.
To celebrate the reopening weekend, both the Vienna and Germantown stores will give away a free reusable bag to the first 100 customers.
