The National Grocers Association (NGA) led the successful effort to curb changes to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) while securing critical pro-growth, pro-Main Street tax provisions that will benefit family-owned independent grocers.
NGA shared its appreciation to Congress and President Donald Trump for taking action in the recently passed reconciliation bill to protect America’s Main Street entrepreneurs who otherwise would have faced a significant tax increase.
Coupled with previous action taken by the administration to relieve financially burdensome regulations, the bill’s tax reforms will be crucial to the success of independent grocers nationwide and preserving American jobs.
Key provisions such as permanently increasing the death tax exemption, extending 100-percent bonus depreciation and making the 199A pass-through deduction permanent will provide meaningful relief to family-owned businesses, according to NGA.
For independent grocers who prioritize reinvesting in their operations, employees and communities, these are welcome changes. Their inclusion in the bill reflects a growing recognition in Washington that Main Street businesses aren’t just part of the conversation, they’re leading it.
NGA’s members and leadership led efforts to defeat the most damaging SNAP proposals and reshape the cost-sharing mandates that would have placed a financial burden on states. This outcome helps maintain food access for millions of low-income Americans while providing more certainty to Main Street economies, which count on SNAP to support more than 388,000 American jobs.
As the strong public-private partnership between independent grocers and the federal government continues, and the law is implemented in the years ahead, NGA stands ready to work with officials at the USDA and the Treasury Department to help independent grocers navigate the resulting changes.
With its sustained advocacy efforts and engaged members, NGA looks forward to continuing to shape the future of economic growth, food access and opportunities that enable independent grocers to remain at the heart of their communities.
