BJ’s Wholesale Club will open a new location May 8 at 2180 N. U.S. Highway 77 in its Waxahachie, Texas, marking the second of four planned debuts that will increase warehouse club competition for independent grocers across the Dallas-Fort Worth region.

The opening follows the chain’s April 24 Texas debut in Forney and precedes additional clubs planned for Southwest Fort Worth and Grand Prairie in the coming weeks. BJ’s, which has operates 264 clubs and 205 gas locations across 22 states, is making its first major push into a region long served by regional and independent operators.

New competitive dynamic

The Massachusetts-based chain is entering Texas with the value-focused playbook that has driven its growth in other markets — a mix of bulk pricing, fresh assortment and fuel rewards. For independent grocers in the region, the rollout signals an intensifying battle for share of basket among value-conscious shoppers.

To draw early traffic, Waxahachie BJ’s Gas will offer members $2 per gallon from 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. on May 6. The promotional price applies to regular gas and has a 30-gallon limit.

Limited-time membership offers start at $20 for one year and include 10 cents off per gallon at BJ’s Gas for the first six months. Members can combine the 10-cents-off-per-gallon offer with the one-day $2 gas promotion on May 6.

Hunger relief partnership

BJ’s is also entering the market with a community-facing strategy, partnering with North Texas Food Bank by regularly donating produce, meat, dairy products and more to support the community.

Trisha Cunningham, president and CEO of North Texas Food Bank, said the partnership will help the organization expand its reach.

“Through our partnership with BJ’s Wholesale Club, we’re able to further our mission of closing the hunger gap in North Texas by providing access to nutritious food,” Cunningham said. “We’re grateful for the support of BJ’s and are excited to welcome them into the community.”

The food bank tie-in is a familiar play in markets where warehouse clubs are working to establish goodwill alongside their commercial expansion — a dynamic independent operators across North Texas will be watching closely as the new clubs open.

What independents are up against

For local independent operators, the Waxahachie opening underscores the operational areas where warehouse clubs continue to differentiate. BJ’s offers fresh foods, produce, a full-service deli, fresh bakery, household essentials, gas and exclusive items in a one-stop format.

Members can choose from several time-saving options, whether shopping online or in-club. Curbside pickup, in-club pickup, same-day delivery and shipping are available. Members shopping in-club can use ExpressPay through the BJ’s mobile app to scan products as they shop and skip the checkout line.

The chain also allows members to combine BJ’s coupons with many manufacturers’ coupons — a stacking strategy that puts pressure on traditional grocery margins.

Region in flux

The Waxahachie opening lands as North Texas continues to attract competitive grocery investment, including recent expansion announcements from regional and national operators. With four Texas clubs in BJ’s near-term pipeline, independent grocers in Ellis County and surrounding markets will be navigating a more crowded competitive set heading into summer.

BJ’s Wholesale Club is an operator of membership warehouse clubs focused on delivering significant value to its members. Headquartered in Marlborough, Massachusetts, the company pioneered the warehouse club model in New England in 1984.
