Bi-Rite

Bi-Rite Family of Businesses is planning for a new Bi-Rite Market at 6001 California St. in San Francisco’s Richmond District, with a target opening timeline of 2027.

The future market will be the company’s fourth neighborhood grocery store and builds on the success of Bi-Rite Market Polk Street, which opened in 2024.

The effort reflects Bi-Rite’s 10-year vision for responsible growth rooted in support for the local community. It also will help expand the company’s support for San Francisco’s nonprofits and programs involving food, youth and education.

The market is expected to create about 75 jobs.

Historic corner reimagined

The location sits in a historic 1917 building that has been vacant for about two years and has long served as a grocery store.

Bi-Rite plans to honors the building’s legacy while reimagining it to serve the residential neighborhood that lies along on a major transit line.

“There’s a real need for a walkable grocery store in this part of the Richmond,” said co-CEO Patrick Mills. “We’ve had people reach out directly, sharing how excited they are for us to come.”

Full-service market experience

Shoppers can expect a one-stop-shop neighborhood market that offers a farmers market experience seven days a week.

It also will carry a range of house-made prepared foods, including entrees, dips, salads, desserts, baked goods and ice cream. An on-site kitchen and deli will offer made-to-order sandwiches and bowls.

In addition, the market will have a meat and seafood program, responsibly sourced grocery staples, dairy, cheese, snacks and beverages, a curated selection of wine, beer and spirits. Outdoor seating will encourage gathering and connection.

“We’re not just opening a store; we’re committing to the neighborhood for decades to come,” said Brianne O’Leary Gagnon, co-CEO. “Our goal is to create a space where people can find the most delicious food, feel taken care of and stay connected to their community.”

Growth rooted in community

Sam Mogannam, founder and second-generation co-owner of Bi-Rite Family of Businesses, said the company’s approach to growth has always been driven by purpose rather than scale.

“It’s about creating places where people can gather, discover great food and feel connected to each other and to the amazing people behind what they’re eating,” Mogannam said.

About the company

Under the leadership of Mogannam since 1998, Bi-Rite is on a mission of “Creating Community Through Food.” The 80-year-old company has grown to include three neighborhood markets, a creamery celebrating its 20th anniversary this year and a catering company.

It also includes 18 Reasons, a nonprofit community cooking school that encourages Bay Area residents to shop, cook and eat good food.
