Earth Day 2026 finds major regional grocers investing in sustainability efforts that range from on-site production and waste diversion to associate volunteering and checkout-lane giving campaigns.
H-E-B
H-E-B is marking Earth Day with its annual reusable bag giveaway, distributing 276,000 free bags featuring Garner State Park along the Frio River – the third and final installment in a three-year state park series. Additional bags are available for $1.50, made largely from ocean-bound plastic. Since 2008, the grocer has distributed more than 3.4 million reusable bags on Earth Day.
H-E-B’s School Plastic Bag Recycling Challenge drew 816 Texas schools this year, with participants collecting more than 8.4 million plastic bags – surpassing the previous record of 6.7 million. Since 2022, the challenge has recycled nearly 25 million bags, with participating schools receiving gift cards ranging from $250 to $1,000.
Through its Our Texas, Our Future commitment, H-E-B is also underwriting the Trash Free Gulf campaign and sponsoring litter cleanups in major watersheds and along the coastline. The grocer’s Recycling for Texans grants – totaling nearly $1 million since 2021 across 15 communities – support municipal recycling programs in cities including Carrizo Springs, Columbus, Del Rio and Eagle Pass, reaching more than 720,000 residents.
H-E-B has placed How2Recycle labels on more than 6,800 private-label items across its H-E-B, Hill Country Fare, Central Market and Mi Tienda brands. Its Carrying Goodness program, which redirects reusable bags through Goodwill and food banks, has expanded from Central Texas to San Antonio, with Houston planned.
An annual register campaign for H-E-B Trees for Texans, in partnership with Texan by Nature, runs through May 5, supporting native tree plantings at schools and in communities. Since 2012, H-E-B has contributed more than $20 million to more than 500 environmental organizations focused on land, water, habitat and coastal preservation.
Publix Super Markets
Publix is combining Earth Day and Arbor Day observances this year with associate volunteerism and a customer-facing giving campaign.
Nearly 8,000 associates are participating in more than 160 environmental projects during spring Publix Serves Week, including park cleanups and tree plantings across the company’s eight-state footprint.
At the register, Publix’s Good Together environmental campaign runs through April 26, allowing customers to round up or donate at checkout. In Florida, funds support the National Park Foundation and FORCE BLUE for waterway and coastal protection. In the grocer’s seven other states – Alabama, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee and Virginia – donations benefit the Arbor Day Foundation’s reforestation efforts. Since 2024, the campaign has raised nearly $5 million.
Publix also maintains a year-round sustainable seafood commitment through a partnership with the Sustainable Fisheries Partnership, with in-store labels and sustainability icons available at the seafood counter to help customers make informed choices.
“Sustainability continues to be a core part of who we are at Publix,” said CEO Kevin Murphy.

The Winn-Dixie Co.
Winn-Dixie used Earth Day to mark the opening of an autonomous ice micro-factory at its Plant City distribution center, developed with Relocalize, that produces SE Grocers Party Cubes on demand. The company reports the facility reduces transportation-related greenhouse gas emissions by up to 90 percent and uses plastic-negative packaging.
The grocer also continues offering digital receipts and circulars through the Winn-Dixie app. Through year-end 2026, each purchase of a $2.99 reusable bag triggers an $11 donation to Feeding America. The grocer’s ecoATM program, currently in 14 stores, has recycled more than 94,000 devices, diverting 36,000 pounds of e-waste and cutting more than 4,000 tons of CO₂ emissions.
Winn-Dixie associates have led eight Florida beach cleanups in 2026, collecting 1,200 pounds of trash from state parks including Bill Baggs Cape Florida and St. Andrews.
“Serving our neighbors also means protecting the environment we all share,” said Chairman and CEO Anthony Hucker.
Winn-Dixie has appeared on Forbes’ Best Brands for Social Impact list for four consecutive years.
Wegmans Food Markets
Wegmans is marking the 10th anniversary of its Zero Waste initiative this Earth Day. Launched in 2016 with a single-store pilot in Canandaigua, New York, the program has since expanded chainwide. The company reports that nearly 90 percent of materials from its operations are now diverted from landfills.
The strategy centers on food donation, composting and recycling. In 2025, Wegmans donated 36.8 million pounds of food to local hunger-relief organizations. When food cannot be donated, the company partners with Natural Upcycling to compost scraps or generate energy.
“We started this work by asking a simple question — what more could we do? — and that mindset continues to guide us today,” said Sustainability Area Manager Chris Foote.
Different Approaches, Shared Commitment
From the checkout lane to the coast, grocers across the country are finding their own approaches to environmental stewardship – whether through a school recycling challenge, a volunteer cleanup, an ice micro-factory or a prompt at the pin pad.
H-E-B, Publix and Winn-Dixie each bring different strengths to the effort. What they share is a recognition that sustainability initiatives, done well, also make good business sense – building customer loyalty, reducing operational costs and deepening ties to the communities they serve.
