NGA Wraps Successful Fly-In For Fair Competition

NGA Fly-In for Fair

The National Grocers Association (NGA) concluded its annual Fly-In for Fair Competition May 22 with attendees participating in 200 critical meetings with decision makers on Capitol Hill.

“Over the last two days, independent grocers made their voices heard on Capitol Hill by advocating for antitrust enforcement, SNAP choice and credit card swipe fee reform, all issues that have a direct impact on their day-to-day operations,” said Greg Ferrara, NGA’s president and CEO.

“This event has become the cornerstone of NGA’s annual advocacy efforts, providing a platform for grocers to discuss critical issues affecting their businesses with lawmakers. NGA will leverage these discussions to promote policies that support independent grocers and the many communities they serve.”

During event, Carlos Castro, owner of Woodbridge, Virginia-based Todos Supermarket, received NGA’s Spirit of America Award, which was established in 1982 to honor industry and community leaders in the areas of community service and government relations. Previous recipients include Presidents George H.W. Bush and Gerald Ford.

“NGA is honored to present the Spirit of America Award to Carlos Castro in recognition for his advocacy leadership and the dedication to the communities he serves,” Ferrara said.

“At the Fly-In for Fair Competition, independent grocers advocated for policies that will benefit independent grocers, so it’s fitting that we can honor Carlos here. He truly represents why independent grocers are crucial to their communities and need a level playing field.”

To conclude the event, NGA held a Congressional reception, featuring a Best Bagger showdown, with the winner of the 2024 Best Bagger Championship, Madison Ireland of Harmons Neighborhood Grocer in Utah, competing against U.S. Rep. Celeste Maloy (UT-02).

“The Congressional Best Bagger Showdown is an exciting way to conclude NGA’s Fly-In for Fair Competition,” said Laura Strange, NGA’s chief communications and engagement officer.

“Grocery bagging is one of the most important customer service skills, and it’s always a pleasure to come together and highlight the talent of the nation’s best bagger. We thank Congresswoman Maloy for taking the time to compete in this fun event against a fellow Utahan.”
