In observance of Veterans Day, Weis Markets made a $5,000 donation on Nov. 11 to the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank’s MilitaryShare program.
The program provides food insecure veterans, active servicemembers and their families with the support they need. The program offers registered families a box of food at armories, VFW and AMVET locations throughout the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank’s 27-county service area. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank reports that more than 20 percent of households receiving food assistance have at least one member who has served, or is serving, in the military.
“We thank Weis Markets for their generous support of our MilitaryShare program,” said Joe Arthur, executive director of the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank.
“Unfortunately, hunger is an issue affecting veterans and active-duty military personnel and their families in central Pennsylvania, including Northumberland County. Our MilitaryShare program is important to address this need, and this gift from Weis Markets will help ensure this program’s sustainability. Veterans and members of the military help us in our nation’s time of need and it’s critical we help them in theirs. They fought for our freedom. By providing them with food to feed their families, we are fighting for their future.”
Representatives from Weis Markets presented the donation to the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank at American Legion Post 44 in Northumberland, Pennsylvania, which is one of the pickup locations for families registered through the MilitaryShare program.
“This is the sixth year that American Legion Post 44 has participated in the MilitaryShare program. We started out distributing boxes of food to 34 families, and we now support about 150 families each month,” said Dick Simpson, coordinator for American Legion Post 44.
“We are proud to provide this service to the recipients and make their lives easier, and we thank the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank and donors like Weis Markets for making this work possible.”
Every Thursday, Weis Markets offers veterans and active duty servicemembers a 10 percent discount on Weis Quality products.
