Iselin, New Jersey-based Allegiance Retail Services has announced the death of Daniel Katz, chairman and CEO.
Having served in these positions since 2019, Katz led the cooperative through transformational periods and was instrumental in solidifying supply agreements.
He, along with his brother Noah, was co-president of PSK Operating, a longtime member of the Allegiance and Foodtown organizations, which owns and operates 13 supermarkets in New York under the Foodtown, Freshtown and Pathmark banners.
“This is a profound loss,” said John T. Derderian, president and COO. “The strength of Dan’s leadership, wisdom and insight can be seen in the confidence with which our co-op members operate. Dan believed in family – his own, his PSK family and that of our cooperative members. He continually looked for ways to strengthen bonds and to serve the best interests of the co-op.”
In a special board meeting following Katz’s death, Lou Scaduto Jr., president of Food Circus Supermarkets, was elected to serve as Allegiance’s CEO and chairman of its board of directors.
“Dan’s contribution to Allegiance as both an operating member, CEO and chairman, can be characterized in one word – outstanding,” Scaduto said. “His commitment to, and vision for the cooperative was inspiring.”
The Katz family is finalizing details to create a foundation in Katz’s honor. Once complete, those wishing to contribute in his memory may view ways to do so on the Allegiance website.
