Big Y World Class Markets is conducting the company’s third annual “May is Pet Month” donation drive.

The program, which runs in all 70 Big Y stores through May 31, encourages shoppers to purchase food and other supplies for a local shelter as part of the company’s ongoing effort to give back to the community. Customers also are donating other needed pet items, including collars, leashes, cat litter and pet toys.

Each Big Y store chooses a local pet shelter for its donations. New to the program this year are $1 donation cards at each register where the money collected goes to the Humane Society of Connecticut, Kenway’s Cause, the Humane Society and the MSPCA of Massachusetts.

The first two years of the pet drive collectively resulted in donations of more than 105,000 pounds of pet food and supplies for more than 50 local animal shelters.

Big Y has partnered with iHeart Media and Pure Harmony pet food to promote Pet Month, along with The Hometown Foundation to raise funds to support pet rescue and animal welfare causes during the month in honor of National Pet Month.

Big Y says its employees have enjoyed decorating their stores’ donation bins with pictures of their family pets.
