SpartanNash, a member of the C&S Wholesale Grocers family of companies, celebrated the grand opening of its fifth Supermercado Nuestra Familia location at 2021 SE 29th St. in Topeka, Kansas, expanding the retail banner and the company’s footprint into the state for the first time.
The 50,000-square-foot store offers Hispanic flavors and culture for the Highland Crest, Central Highland Park, Oakland and other neighborhoods in southeast Topeka.
“Our new store is a true reflection of Topeka’s vibrant Hispanic community, honoring its tastes and traditions,” said Joaquin Castillo, store director for Supermercado Nuestra Familia.
“We’re excited to welcome shoppers with exceptional service from our associates, an outstanding selection of authentic Hispanic grocery favorites and a one-stop shop for all your grocery staples.”
The grand opening event featured a live performance from a local mariachi band and dance group, kid-friendly activities, sampling and swag giveaways. As part of the festivities, the store team presented a $5,000 donation to Highland Park High School, reinforcing SpartanNash’s ongoing commitment to education and community development.
“Our Supermercado Nuestra Familia banner is an exciting part of our portfolio of nearly 200 retail stores in 11 states, and we’re proud to serve the Topeka community with fresh and authentic food solutions,” said Jay Mahabir, VP of retail operations at SpartanNash.
Store features authentic Hispanic grocery experience
Serving communities since 2013, Supermercado Nuestra Familia focuses on quality, convenience and community, offering an assortment of fresh fruits, vegetables and dried chiles and spices. Aguas frescas and horchata can be found alongside fresh-cut fruit. Meat is sliced fresh in the full-service carnicería. Tres leches cakes, gelatins and flans are prepared daily.
The cocina features fresh cheeses, creams and handmade favorites like tamales, enchiladas, beans and rice. Customers can also find freshly made corn and flour tortillas in the tortilleria, along with the convenience of a one-stop shop for other everyday grocery staples. The store includes bilingual signage and service throughout.

Banner expansion continues
Later this month, SpartanNash will celebrate the grand opening of its sixth Supermercado Nuestra Familia, introducing a smaller-format, convenience-focused grocery experience in Omaha, Nebraska.
“The brand-new location reflects the tastes and traditions of Topeka’s vibrant Hispanic community,” said Djouma Barry, SpartanNash’s SVP and chief retail officer.
“Shoppers will enjoy exceptional service from our associates and a terrific assortment of authentic Hispanic grocery items. As we welcome Topeka associates into our food solutions company, we’re eager to integrate them into our People First culture and provide them with the tools and training for success.”
SpartanNash operates two complementary business segments: food wholesale and grocery retail. Its global supply chain network serves wholesale customers that include independent and chain grocers, national retail brands, e-commerce platforms and U.S. military commissaries and exchanges. The company distributes products for every aisle in the grocery store, from fresh produce to household goods to its OwnBrands private label, which includes the Our Family portfolio of products.
On the retail side, SpartanNash operates nearly 200 brick-and-mortar grocery stores, primarily under the banners of Family Fare, Martin’s Super Markets and D&W Fresh Market, in addition to dozens of pharmacies and fuel centers with convenience stores.
