Miner’s Inc. has reached a tentative agreement to purchase S&R Quisberg Inc.’s Cub Foods and Supervalu grocery stores in Baxter, Brainerd and Pequot Lakes, Minnesota.

The Quisberg family, owners of S&R Quisberg’s, have operated retail grocery stores in the region since 1985. As part of the agreement, the store in Baxter will close in September.

“This decision was very difficult, but we decided that the time was right to retire from the grocery business,” said Chris Quisberg, president. “As a family-owned regional retail grocery company, Miner’s is best positioned to serve our customers and the community.

“We also believe that the Miner’s organization is a good fit for our employees. I’d like to thank our employees for all their hard work and for everything they have done. We wouldn’t have been successful for over 39 years without  them.”

Miner’s Inc. is a fourth-generation, family-owned retailer operating under the banners of Super One Foods, Super One Liquor and Woodland Marketplace Foods. In addition, it owns an Ace Hardware location in Superior, Wisconsin, and operates a distribution center and trucking division in Duluth, Minnesota.

The Miner family has served the region since 1943 and has maintained a presence in the Brainerd Lakes area for more than 40 years.

Miner’s is continually exploring ways to grow our grocery business, and we look forward to integrating these locations into our organization,” said Patrick Miner, president and CEO.

Adding these store locations presents our company with an opportunity to strengthen and grow our presence in northern Minnesota and earn a stronger customer base by delivering the low prices and better choices that our loyal patrons enjoy today.”

The Cub Foods in Brainerd and Supervalu store in Pequot Lakes will rebrand as Super One Foods immediately upon purchase. In addition, they will undergo many transitional changes, including – but not limited to – retail pricing, relocation of products and rebranding.

“The changes will take the great foundation and success that the Quisbergs and their team created and build upon that to enhance customer offerings and meet new customer needs,”  Miner said.

“We believe that acquiring the Quisbergs’ stores demonstrates Miner’s commitment to the local community, now serving the Brainerd Lakes area for over four decades, and our strong desire to maintain a significant presence in these markets for the foreseeable future.”

S&R Quisberg has more than 200 employees, and its workforce will be offered interviews for employment with Super One Foods.

“Miner’s is excited for the opportunity to welcome the many talented individuals who will be joining the Super One team,” Miner said.

The transaction is in the due diligence phase and scheduled to close in September. With the purchase, Miner’s will own and operate 33 retail grocery and 11 liquor stores across northern Minnesota, Wisconsin and Michigan.
