Understanding the value women bring to the company, Northgate González Market is commemorating International Women’s Day 2021 by recognizing 42 women associates with the Doña Teresa Reynoso de Gonzalez Award.

The Doña Teresa Reynoso de Gonzalez Award originated in 2020. Named after the founder’s wife, Doña Teresa, it shines a spotlight on women working at the company’s grocery stores and corporate office who embody and exemplify Doña Teresa’s values of unity, honesty and leadership.

“We are blessed to have these remarkable women working for our company,” said Miguel González, co-president of Northgate Market. “My mother Doña Teresa was a major catalyst and influencer to our business success. She was known as the CEO, chief emotional officer of the family and business, placing hard work, family and faith at the forefront of everything we do. It’s a mantra that continues to drive our company today.”

One of the honorees, Xochitl Marrota, is a second assistant at the grocery store in La Habra, California. She is a single mother of two children and active in her local Girls Scouts troop with her daughter.

“I am deeply honored to receive this award, knowing how much Doña Teresa meant to the González family,” said Marrota. “It has been a difficult year with the pandemic and raising my children. This award makes the hard work and struggle feel all worth it.”

Northgate Market will host a virtual awards ceremony from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Friday, March 12, with all 42 winners and the owners of the company.

In addition, an online webinar called “Woman to Woman: On Leadership, Personal & Financial Well-Being” is scheduled for March 10 at 6:30 p.m., where women leaders and Northgate Market family members will be sharing their stories and inspiration with store associates and the public. Speakers will include Beatriz Acevedo, cultural strategist and entrepreneur; Bricia Lopez, chef and author; Paulina Lopez, chef and content creator; Evelyn Gonzalez, registered nutritionist and dietician; and Teresa Alvarado Gonzalez, business owner.

The 40 winners of the Doña Teresa Reynoso de Gonzalez Award were nominated by fellow associates. A team of external judges comprised of the third generation of Gonzalez women selected the honorees. The women who won this new and prestigious award were selected based on multiple criteria such as: how they embodied the values of Doña Teresa Reynoso de Gonzalez, how they helped make their community and environment better and the number of nominations received on their behalf.

Founded in 1980, Northgate González Market is an authentic, family-owned and operated Hispanic supermarket chain with 41 stores in Orange, Los Angeles, Riverside and San Diego counties. Headquartered in Anaheim, California, the grocery retailer furthers its commitment to its communities through the González Reynoso Family Foundation, which provides scholarships and assists families in need.
