Giant Food is donating $50,000 to five Feeding America food bank partners across the Mid-Atlantic region as part of its Easter hunger relief efforts and 90th anniversary celebrations.
The funding will be distributed among the Capital Area Food Bank, Maryland Food Bank, Blue Ridge Area Food Bank, Food Bank of Delaware and Fredericksburg Regional Food Bank to help feed families during the holiday.
The expanded support builds on Giant’s tradition of donating hundreds of hams to community partners each Easter. The shift to direct funding allows the grocer to broaden its impact across the region.
“For 90 years, community has and continues to be at the heart of Giant Food, making it truly a special place to shop and work,” said Felis Andrade, Giant director of external communications and community relations. “We believe it is our responsibility as a retailer to support our neighbors and community partners by helping provide food one meal at a time in the fight against hunger. No one deserves to go hungry, and we are proud to contribute to that work with the local food pantries in our region.”
Giant partners with local food recovery organizations including churches, soup kitchens and Feeding America food banks. The grocer’s top charitable priority is addressing hunger in the communities it serves.
Giant Food has operated in the greater Washington, D.C. region since opening its first location in the city in 1936. The company operates 163 supermarkets in Virginia, Maryland, Delaware and the District of Columbia with approximately 20,000 associates, including 153 pharmacies and 28 Starbucks locations.
