Walmart Neighborhood Market rapid remodels

Walmart will begin testing a rapid remodel process at select Neighborhood Market stores in April, temporarily closing main sales floors for four weeks while keeping pharmacies and fuel stations open. The pilot spans stores in Florida, Oklahoma, Texas, Georgia, South Carolina and Louisiana.

The accelerated timeline compresses a remodel process that traditionally stretches several months, with the goal of reducing disruption for shoppers while delivering upgraded stores faster.

What’s changing inside

When stores reopen, shoppers will find expanded aisles, reconfigured layouts, updated online grocery pickup and delivery areas and upgraded checkout zones. Digital price signage will highlight rollbacks and featured items, and new associate-facing tools will help staff locate products and assist customers more efficiently. Pharmacy departments will also receive updates at participating locations.

Specific changes will vary by store based on community needs, Walmart said.

Store associates will work alongside remodel crews during the four-week closure, setting up new fixtures and organizing product. Walmart framed associate involvement as central to the process rather than incidental to it.

Minimizing customer impact

Walmart said the stores selected for the pilot were chosen in part because other Walmart locations are nearby, giving shoppers in-store alternatives during the closure. Pickup orders can be placed at neighboring stores through the app or online, and delivery in as fast as 30 minutes remains available throughout the closure period.

The company described the pilot as a test-and-learn initiative to identify best practices before broader application.

Walmart operates more than 5,200 stores in the U.S., including roughly 700 Neighborhood Market locations focused primarily on grocery and pharmacy.
